In my youth the police typically carried .38 six-shot revolvers.
Usually a S&W model 10.
Forty years ago, my duty pistol was a .357 Smith & Wesson. I was allowed to carry the pistol, but was restricted to.38 cartridges. I loaded 5 .38s, and one .357, with the .357 being the chamber which would fire first. Figured my first shot was the one which would count the most. Never had to test my theory.

In my youth we only loaded five into six-shooters.

The standard was the Chief’s Special .38, a five shot revolver with a 1 7/8 inch barrel. I have one. Hard to hit a barn from 20 feet, kicks like a mule but will knock that barn down if you can hit it.
