McMichael describes fatally shooting Arbery

(Excerpted)

McMichael said he was at home with family on Feb. 23 when his father came into the room and told him the man they believed had been breaking into houses in their neighborhood was back.

McMichael grabbed his shotgun and got into his truck with his father, Gregory, in the passenger seat. Although they didn't know Arbery's name at the time, they were looking for him.

When McMichael caught up with Arbery, he said he drove beside him and asked him to "please stop" but that Arbery didn't stop or speak to him.

At one point, McMichael said, he told Arbery the police were coming because he believed his father had called them, which he said caused Arbery to run off.

With his father in the the truck, McMichael eventually parked. That's when he saw Arbery running toward him, and McMichael said he raised his shotgun to deter Arbery, who ran toward the other side of the truck.

McMichael said Arbery then started to run back toward the truck and, worried that Arbery was going to harm his father, McMichael ran toward him. That's when the two began to fight.

"He had my gun. He struck me," McMichael said, choking up as he described the shooting. "It was obvious that he was attacking me, that if he would've got the shotgun from me, then it was a life or death situation. And I'm gonna have to stop him from doing this, so I shot."

McMichael said he felt that Arbery was overpowering him and he had to use lethal force.

I been watching this case all week.

Being a true crime afficiando, I am mesmerized.

My opinion, for what it’s worth, is that this case is much like Rittenhouse....the assailant was going to grab the gun of the owner and shoot HIM.

On other words, self-defense.

But a spell binder.

If the third guy never released the video, then none of this would have ever happened. They declined to press charges, yet he felt like he had to do it to "clear the air".

People need to wake up and realize that you're not going to successfully explain yourself to people who are looking for any reason to hang you.

It’s all on video.

I guess over jury is a minor offense compared to what he’s going to get.

These guys are morons.

You don’t need to explain yourself if you don’t chase someone down and kill him.

Sure, just like Kyle “chased down and killed someone”.

“Sure, just like Kyle “chased down and killed someone”.”

Rittenhouse was chased. I don’t know why you say the above.

Difference is these guys went after Aubrey.
Rittenhouse spent the whole time trying to escape.

Two totally opposite scenarios. Rittenhouse was running away and being chased by those he shot. In the Arbery (sp) the shooter was the one chasing the victim based on nothing other than his personal opinion. From what I e seen so far in that shooter’s own words, it was a bad shoot. In the very least it should be negligent manslaughter over the struggle over the shotgun. But, make no mistake, the shooter, in his own words, was the aggressor.

Now you are speaking of sense not all clear in my head.

I know that are many elements to how this came about, including all kinds of videos. There is even a video of Arbery in the house he was looking to rob.

And I know about this third video that another neighbor took but this all gets a bit jumbled for me. Normally it takes me a while to get it all straight in my head.

So originally the justice people decided not to charge but this guy does a TADA and comes up with another video that maybe brings some things into question?

As I think about it, I really think if I had a video of a big murder happening I’d turn it over.

I understand your point but thinking we’ve made to fear so much any more out here across the fruited plains that many of us would be too scared to hold out.

If Arberry had pulled a .44 magnum and offed the shotgun-holding MF, and said
“No, you’re not bringing out the gimp!”, I’d have voted to acquit on the grounds of self-defense.

Any normal person , when asked by the people in the pickup , in broad daylight , to stop for a moment , would have stopped for a moment. “ Yes sir, what’s going on?” “ Why am I here ? Just going for a run ,sir”
Show a little respect , black to white, whites to black. No need aggro , no need act suspicious . Just be normal and neighborly and none of that would have ever happened.

Worst case should have been , “ You have called the police? Ok, let’s just wait right here and we can talk to them.”

All of these incidents that become life and death m start with someone defying police orders , or being nuts ,when they should just be calm and chill.

If you are innocent , it’s easy to be relaxed, calm and chill .

What about the part where they chased him with two vehicles around the neighborhood?

Moral of the story: If you think someone might have done something in your neighborhood, video it and call the police.

Perhaps the kid might have done some minor crime. We don’t know. Do not grab weapons and hunt him down in your truck because he looked suspicious.

The only problem is that Kyle wasn't the aggressor, nor did he chase anyone down with his gun

You can't chase someone down at gun point, block their way on a public street and the claim self defense because the unarmed man tried to defend himself against your illegal actions trying to get away from you.

Those are facts of this case

I won’t stop for no ones command, that is how your end up buried in steel drum in a corn field somewhere.

You need a reality check

Don’t play cop, call the real cops and let them deal with the “suspicious jogger”

I am not stopping for someone who confronts me in a pickup and tells me to wait there for the police. They have no authority to do that unless they have witnessed a crime that merits such -— like shooting someone, assaulting someone, raping someone, setting a house on fire, etc. Walking through a neighborhood does not count.

These fools are going to prison.

Apples and oranges. Rittenhouse was faced with people who were armed and were attacking him. Arbery was unarmed. The McMichaels initiated the incident by trying to stop Arbery and threatening him with pistols and shotguns. In most states if you are the initiator of the conflict you have a hard time proving self defense.

Nothing at all like Rittenhouse case. These clowns chased this guy down they street. They are going to jail and deservedly so.

'There is even a video of Arbery in the house he was looking to rob.'

Arbery went there multiple times, all on film, and never left with anything. Perhaps, he was really curious in the building process. But, other people on video took things.
