When I was a high school freshman I went through a brief phase of telling tall tales. I would be standing around with older boys trading stories and - I’m not proud of it - but I felt like I needed to impress them, or entertain them or something - and my real life seemed too unexciting.
I wouldn’t make things up from scratch - I would just tell something I had heard, as if it had happened to me. :-(
I was quickly cured of that when I got caught making something up - it was so embarrassing - I promised myself I’d stick to the truth from that point forward.
It’s so much easier to remember the truth - you don’t have to keep track of what you’ve said in the past!
I have no idea what drives full grown adults to make stuff up… especially people in the public eye - of course they are going to get found out.
