I’m pretty certain that Agnew was forced out of office back in October of 1973 only because it was becoming obvious that Nixon would not survive Watergate and a backroom deal was made to get rid of Agnew and replace him with a moderate that both parties would find acceptable (Jerry Ford).
My recollection is that Agnew had his own legal problems when he was forced out.
