My wife and I have been attending a new church. Near a large University and is mostly 20-somethings and below. Enough older folks to keep things interesting.
The pastor does 40-minute long sermons. He usually goes through a book in the bible for weeks on end. Although now he is on a thing about “Answering Questions”.
How did we get the Bible.
Is it authoritative - is it the true Word of God (Yes!).
What is sin?
Does Hell exist? (yes)
How can a loving God send people to Hell? (He is a God of Justice too).
Anyway - lots of conservative theology which is great to see the younger folks listening to. He was lambasting Progressive Christianity. “Now - this isn’t “progressive” with regard to one’s politics - Christians come in all sorts of political flavors. We’re talking Progressive Christianity. Where false teachers come along and say there are many “truths”. Where they say there is no Hell. Where they say people are mostly good. Where they tickle your ears with what you want to hear.”
My area has several former box stores converted into churches. They all, from what I’ve seen, tend to be like you describe. Meanwhile, the traditional white church with steeple congregations are floundering with stagnant or declining membership. Of course, many of these traditional churches refused to blame their ideology and teachings and insist that it can’t be a “real“ church unless it’s in a pretty white building with the steeple and not a former Best Buy.
