To be fair the coast and Cuenca aren’t high crime areas and it’s highly unlikely any retirees are involved in the drug trade.

I worked for a spell in SE Ecuador, very near the Peru border, which remains in dispute.
Always had an ex-military dude with me who was well armed. The area was crazy...big artisanal gold mining area and everyone was a packin’.
Interesting place...I liked it!!
