The reporter missed a few items:
1) New ICC regulations reduce total truck hours on road by 20% -— same as reducing total number of trucks by 20%.
2) California, to “protect the health of its people”, only allows low emission trucks to pick up containers at the Port of Long Beach; that means only trucks that are less than 3 years old. So newer trucks pick up containers, drive them to Nevada, off load them, and deadhead back to the Port.
3) Trucking companies are being hit by the COVID VAX mandates, thus further reducing the number of trucks available.
4) The only way to cut through this red tape is for Pete Buttplug to go hold negotiations … if he agreed with the solution … but he is missing in action, taking 2 months of maternal leave to bottle feed his new adopted babies.
So don’t hold your breath waiting for a solution.

Trucking can be a complex business
Bunch of years ago, General Motors Canada ran into a sticky problem.
Seems they cut fixed rate $$ per mile with their truckers.
When diesel prices popped, and GM refused to renegotiate, the drivers packed their trucks rather than eat a loss per mile driven
Could be, maybe, the California drivers caught the Covid and are parked until their fuel price returns to normal!
Back when I was working steady, if I did it like these people are doing, I’d be looking for a new job at the end of the day. I think there are things the president could do if he’d quit talking about it & actually do something. So what if it ticks some unions off? What’s more important, them or the nation’s business moving along? You government employees work for us the people, so do your job!
