I grew up in Yonkers, and Columbus Day was celebrated as an Italian American holiday just like Saint Patrick’s day was for the Irish.
Interesting that it wound up being a Federal holiday and St. Patrick's Day is just a day that everyone knows, many celebrate, but no one gets off, like St. Valentine's Day. And there have always been at least as many Irish in most of the ethnic cities.

St. Paddy’s Day is a legal holiday in Boston. It is called Evacuation Day, because it is also the day the British left Boston back in 1776.
