World War 2 was the beginning of the end for San Francisco.
During the war anyone caught engaging in homosexual behavior was given a discharge neither honorable nor dis-honorable. Such discharge was typed up on blue paper and became known as the blue slip, blue ticket, etc. It quickly became common knowledge what a blue discharge meant: homosexual.
During the war the military discharged close to 70,000 members with blue tickets. Most were sent to San Francisco for psychological testing and discharged from there. A large majority stayed there instead of taking their blue tickets home.
After the war the homosexuals that had gone undetected settled there as well.
The downfall of San Francisco and the beginning of the Gay Bay life began in 1942.
