Portlanders affected by gun violence say city investments greatly needed

PORTLAND, Ore. — Portland continues towards a record-breaking year of gun violence, with police reporting more than 800 shootings through the end of August—nearly double the number seen in the same time last year.

Now, some Portlanders say city leaders need more urgency in addressing the issue, as city leaders promised to get funding approved in April into the right hands soon.

City commissioners approved giving just over $4 million to people and organizations in the city on the front lines addressing gun violence. The city spent about $1 million right away. Then, earlier this month, it approved another $2 million in grants. The city is reserving $500,000 for administrative costs, leaving about $600,000 for smaller organizations looking to make a difference.

That includes people like Lionel Irving, who runs an organization called Love is Stronger. Its logo represents Irving’s view of the community, that it is stronger as one.

“Bullets don't got no names. They don't got no destinations. Once they start flying off, anybody can get hit,” Irving said.

It's hard to argue with Irving's assessment of the violence. This year, the city has seen nearly as many shootings in eight months as all of last year—a year that was the most violent in Portland in decades.

Portland city leaders promised to intentionally invest in the Black community since it cut $15 million from the Portland Police Bureau last summer, but in the months since, it's hard to find those investments.

Portland should simply burn the city the rest of the way to the ground and start over! Hard to fix something that is that far gone.

It is hard to find investments when they are poured down a rathole-ie paid out to “consultants”

“Bullets don’t got no names..." Someone with no basic language literacy. Maybe a connection between failed education systems and bullets flying around?

Literacy or illiteracy has little to do with one's moral compass - one's sense of right and wrong. There are well educated people who are monsters and illiterate people who are saints. Fundamentally, we are what we 'believe'.

When you grow up on streets where gangs rule; when you have only 1 parent and she is the blind leading the blind, she lacks wisdom or ability to protect her children from the streets. When your culture teaches and believes that whitey is the cause of all your problems - what will your children believe, how will they act?

Being poor or illierate is not the problem. Being Godless is.

"The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding." - Proverbs 9:10

“As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he.” - Proverbs 23:7?

I’m sure that makes everyone bullet proof.

“Bullets don't got no names....” Irving said.

Ergo, they have names.

Mine are all called Tiffany.

Arm everyone, and give mandatory gun training to all.

And pass unilateral Castle Doctrine/Stand Your Ground absolute laws with no possibility of civil suits. If a shooting is deemed self defense, end of story.

And incarcerate criminals. So what if it's 3 to 1 blax who go to prison? They seem to have no problem with that anyway.

Execute within the month, criminals who are convicted of capital crimes.

Then, repeal all gun laws. Want a full auto mailed to your house? No problem.

Let's get back to a law and order society. There can be no "order" without "law." And there can be no "law" without merciless enforcement.

“It’s hard to find those investments.”

That’s because they are not investments. They are just giveaways. One trouble with socialists is that they are willing to deceive themselves with their own words.

Like The Uniparty and “infrastructure,” the wet noodles running Portland have no idea what an investment is.

Four million won’t do it. Ten million won’t, either. No amount of money will.

Make the judges do their duty to the citizens and throw the thugs under the jail instead of letting them out on the streets.

Amen and Amen. I have been thinking about this more and more as our church goes through a mission conference. With all of the large African-American churches in the USA, why are they not sending missionaries into those places and trying to turn the tide?

I disagree. "Law" with merciless enforcement becomes authoritarianism and tyranny. There can be no "law" without a moral and religious people.

I believe that if Portland and the rest of the liberal leaning cities would just adopt good policing (extensive training and enough resources to do their jobs), and a will to enforce the laws as passed by their legislatures, then they would not have the kinds of problems they are having. But it is like foreign countries are helping us become lawless. That has to stop.

Oregon is so polluted with liberal judge, the police don't have much long term effect. In Multnomah county, the liberal DA is pro-Antifa. I find it hard to believe anyone would apply of a police position.
