Calling it “ping pong” diplomacy is probably not a good start with the Chinese.

The Chinese realize that without reliable, relatively cheap electricity, there is poverty, social unrest and political instability. They will burn anything combustible to generate that electricity. Kerry and the rest of the Biden cabal are astonished that they are so easily able to stall the US economy with their green fantasies but the Chinese simply won’t agree to harm their country

China? Climate change?

11 Sept: Star: China-Australia relations: as demand for coal surges, how long can Beijing keep banning Australian supply?
By CISSY ZHOU and SU-LIN TAN
Even as China’s steel production has cooled down in the past two months, the price of coking coal – which is mixed with iron ore to make steel – has remained relatively high.

For instance, it exceeded 4,000 yuan (US$620) per tonne in some parts of coal hub Shanxi province last week – a surge of more than 45 per cent since the beginning of August, according to Kaiyuan Securities.

Chinese producers usually start to hoard coal from mid-October, but given that the prices have been rising recently, they will start to hoard earlier this year
Li Rong, Cinda Securities...

According to Li Rong, an analyst at Cinda Securities, this means that China’s total annual consumption of thermal coal – which is currently about 3 billion tonnes, with roughly 2.7 billion sourced domestically and the rest imported – is on track to increase by about 10 per cent for the whole year. If that figure holds up, it would require China to source an additional 300 million tonnes of thermal coal to meet demand...

Thirty-six open-pit mines in the autonomous region have renewed land approvals since late August, and land approvals will be granted to mines with an annual capacity of nearly 50 million tonnes in mid-September, according to data published by the state-run Economic Information Daily...

The Chinese government has also urged coal-mining companies to stop hoarding at ports, to ensure a steady coal supply...

Since the conflict between the two countries escalated in April 2020 after Australia pushed for an international investigation into the origin of the coronavirus without diplomatically consulting China, Beijing has unofficially restricted imports of several Australian goods, including coal...

“Australian coal, that otherwise would have gone to China, has found buyers in other markets including India, South Korea and Taiwan”...
https://www.thestar.com.my/aseanplus/aseanplus-news/2021/09/11/china-australia-relations-as-demand-for-coal-surges-how-long-can-beijing-keep-banning-australian-supply

7 Sept: Sydney Morning Herald: China’s ban on Australian coal has an expensive sting in its tail
Indeed, while the iron ore price has fallen about 34 per cent, from just under $US220 a tonne in mid-July to around $US145 a tonne, Australian metallurgical coal prices have soared from around $US100 a tonne at the start of this year to about $US220 a tonne. In China, the steel mills have been paying as much as $US440 a tonne for metallurgical, or coking, coal...

The super-premium prices China is paying are the unintended consequences of its efforts to punish Australia for the temerity of our leaders asking for proper investigations of the origins of the pandemic, criticising China’s treatment of Uighurs and its actions in Hong Kong.

For the moment, at least, while some of the exports China has targeted haven’t had the ability to adjust as easily or seen their markets recover in the same way as energy and metallurgical coal, the Chinese sanctions are hurting its companies and economy more than Australia’s.
