The documents are still Charters of Freedom even if there were groups that were not included in the modern definition of freedom. At the time women could not vote or own property except in their husband’s or another male family member’s name. They would still consider themselves to be free in the sense that they were no longer subjects of a king. This is the historic principle that was put forth by the Declaration of Independence, that all men are created equal.

The Constitution also provided a process that allowed for its amendment to correct its deficiencies as our human sensibilities improved. It contained the seeds of freedom for all even if the country wasn’t quite ready for it at the time it was adopted. Judging the behavior of people in the past by today’s moral understandings is an impossibility and a favorite trick of the left.
