Oh, it’s pretty clear that Grant knew Lee was the better general Lincoln thought so too. Lee was his first choice to lead the Union Army.

this is incorrect. General Scott advised Lincoln that Lee should lead the 75,000 man army that Lincoln had called for. Lee was never considered as a replacement for Scott.
Lee was never officially offered the command. He was asked would he consider that position. Lee never answered the question, he resigned his commission and went South.
