Watch a livestream of the Lee statue in Richmond being removed from its pedestal on Monument Avenue.
The stream, provided by VPM, will begin at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, and for the first hour the stream "will also feature relevant photos and footage related to the removal of the monument," according to a news release from the state agencies overseeing the project.

Just watched as a massive crane took down the magnificent and very famous statue of “Robert E. Lee On His Horse” in Richmond, Virginia. It has long been recognized as a beautiful piece of bronze sculpture. To add insult to injury, those who support this “taking” now plan to cut it into three pieces, and throw this work of art into storage prior to its complete desecration.
Robert E. Lee is considered by many Generals to be the greatest strategist of them all. President Lincoln wanted him to command the North, in which case the war would have been over in one day. Robert E. Lee instead chose the other side because of his great love of Virginia, and except for Gettysburg, would have won the war. He should be remembered as perhaps the greatest unifying force after the war was over, ardent in his resolve to bring the North and South together through many means of reconciliation and imploring his soldiers to do their duty in becoming good citizens of this Country.
Our culture is being destroyed and our history and heritage, both good and bad, are being extinguished by the Radical Left, and we can’t let that happen! If only we had Robert E. Lee to command our troops in Afghanistan, that disaster would have ended in a complete and total victory many years ago. What an embarrassment we are suffering because we don’t have the genius of a Robert E. Lee!

I am beyond scared, as I must admit, by this “rush” to remove statues depicting historical figures who happen to have fallen out of favor with the left.
If you ask me, it had been a great act of magnanimity by the Northern victors to have Southerners put up statues of their military leaders after the WBS had ended.
Dear Southerners, please do accept my assurance that in no way is it my intention to cause you any hurt and pain, but the victors, after some time, came around to realize that the whole nation needed a “healing process” after all the horrors of the war - this is exactly that what was never done in Europe after the last wars (thus the hatred between peoples lingers on for the most part).
And now, old wounds are needlessly ripped open again, or so it seems to me (from the other side of the pond).

Lee was a great and honorable man, and a very good general; he was able to do more with less in the Army of Northern Virginia than just about anyone else could have. He was aided in this by some outstanding subordinates like A.P. Hill, Stonewall Jackson, and J.E.B. Stuart, especially Jackson. Was Lee perfect? No, he made some serious mistakes, but few if any others could have done what he did overall for the South.
Grant may not have been Lee’s equal in the great-and-honorable department, and he may not have been as good a tactical general, but he was the RIGHT general for the Union at the right time. He realized that the Union’s biggest advantage was its mass and firepower and that the best way to handle Lee was not to fight on the South’s terms, but to use that overwhelming numerical advantage to grind them down. And he had the cojones to stick with his strategy even in the face of some losses and appalling casualties, because he knew it was the right one. And it was. Plus he also had some very able subordinates who thought the same way, like Sherman and Sheridan. Grant, in a way, was a better general for the evolving method of mass industrial warfare. Lee was more of an old-school general whose time was ending.

That’s the old mythology of the Lost Cause. Grant moved his men across the Mississippi to the west bank of the river to take Vicksburg. He floated 116 boats down the Tennessee River past Nashville to capture that city. He continually tried to outflank Lee’s forces in the Overland Campaign, but Lee’s smaller force was more maneuverable. After Cold Harbor, he cut off Lee’s supplies at Petersburg before resuming pressure on the ANV.
Grant was a bulldog that would attack from the front to tear off your balls, or circle around to bite you in the ass as circumstances dictated. He always had a clear gaol in mind and didn’t give up at the first sign of trouble. For Robert E. Lee, he was Wellington and Blücher all rolled into one.
But he would KEEP attacking, that’s what I’m saying. Even if he lost, he’d keep punching, keep probing, keep wearing his opponents down. I didn’t say he was some 1860s equivalent of an early-WWII Soviet general sending his men frontally across minefields with their arms linked. He had the resources so that he never needed to let up and pause, he could keep the pressure on until it became unsustainable for Lee to hold on. Grant was skilled at not just using mass as a bludgeon, but using it effectively (with a few exceptions).
