Would like to have some large floating pumice rocks....
Used to find lots and lots of them around Crater Lake / Rogue River National Forest in Oregon growing up.
Lotsa fun tossing a basketball sized one to unknowing friends and win bets with my college buds.
Probably get cited by “Willie” the FS ranger for taking any now.
Landsat 8 imagery also show several floating rafts of pumice drifting northwest of the eruption site. The satelliteâÂÂs Operational Land Imager (OLI) captured a remarkable image (above) of expansive gray pumice rafts on August 17, 2021, a few days after the eruption began. Pumice is one of the only types of rock that can float due to a combination of surface tension and the many air-filled holes and cavities found within the rock.
All you need is a ticket to South Iwo Jima and a boat ride later, all the fresh pumice you want. And no fear of a $50 ticket from Ranger Willie.
