Accuweather is stating that there wasn’t enough time for NOLA to enact contrafow.

What a reeking, steaming pile of utter BS.

So evacuate after the storm?

Good grief.

A good source of info is Fox 8 out of New Orleans. I just watched their latest news.

Another good source is WWL.com (New Orleans).

My wife and I are watching this thing. Her brother lives in a little town that will be very close to the eye of this storm.

My Mother lives there. She stayed two months with us for two months after Katrina.

Total rainfall accumulations of 8 to 16 inches with isolated maximum amounts of 20 inches are possible across southeast Louisiana and southern Mississippi through Monday.

20 inches of rain is almost unfathomable. That's half the ANNUAL rainfall of most areas in the USA.

I remember living in Chelmsford, MA in the early 1990s when ten inches of rain fell in a single weekend, which I believe was the remnants of a tropical storm. I had two sump pumps working in my basement and still couldn't keep up. Ended up with two feet of water in that basement. I had a Packard-Bell 486 computer at the time and that was the first thing I saved out of the basement. The cat was on its own (it did survive but I have no idea how).

**********

Apparently you have never been in the aftermaths of a hurricane
Some times it takes months to get every thing restored/repaired for
people to live in again. People that are there have to be transferred
out while renovations are on going.

We’re talking about New Orleans, wherein 1800 people died, an entire fleet of school busses drowned, and a massive airlift was necessary after Hurricane Katrina. Sometimes evacuation before the storm is prudent.

Lol. Oh dear.

I assure you I have been through multiple hurricanes.

When you’re in a low lying area it’s ALWAYS prudent to head out ahead of time.

There is never a guarantee that you’ll even be able to get gas to get outta town or even be able to get a few miles down the road. That is, if you survive. Watch the mississippi coast when one is coming head on. They dont wait until after the storm to evacuate. Are you kidding? It’s a ghost town usually before a storm like this. Sure some stay. Most don’t.

And people by and large dont evacuate after the fact unless they come home to houses that are totally destroyed. Even then they have come back because they left in the first place. Most dont survive being in the home when it’s destroyed. If it isnt destroyed then most have to stay to fix the damage. Most dont have the luxury of just leaving town and letting someone else fix their home. They need to be close.
The people evacuating after a storm hits land is usually because they are in danger. Like when flooding is unexpected. Like in Harvey.

New Orleans KNOWS it will flood esp if pumps are down already and they are predicting 20 in of rain.

Plus new Orleans on the dirty side this time. Even without the water issues, they should be evacuating for the wind alone. Those old houses arent built this. Especially not in the poorer areas.

Just my 3 cents.

And my main point is this...
16 years later they STILL arent prepared for this scenario.

Late last night there were quite a few repostings of a Twitter post by NWS New Orleans that said:

🌀#Ida continues to move to the NW. With the current forecast preparations must be rushed to completion. #Ida is still forecasted to make landfall as a Cat 4 Hurricane. If you are able or under evacuation orders leave! #mswx #lawx

Yes my 2 cents also the rebuild after these things is harder than most understand. Friends house after Harvey house came through storm ok except for electric power head and meter that got ripped off by flying debris. Electric power got restored quickly all things considered but meter and power head were back ordered for weeks so small generator for weeks with power all around.

In 1979, Tropical Storm Claudette dropped 48 inches of rain on my head in 24 hours. THAT was “unfathomable”. 20” is a piece of cake. ;-).

Crappy cake … no doubt.

NO can handle rain. It’s storm surge that can bury them.

The further east, the better for NO. Even 50 miles East changes the surge pattern considerably. Ida looks to be powerful, but not HUGE like Katrina. A few miles can make a bit difference. The difference between having severe wind damage or being flattened by storm surge.
