All Biden Had to Do Was…Nothing
Commentary ^ | 15 Aug 2021 | John Podhoretz

All Joe Biden had to do was nothing. Had Joe Biden done nothing, Afghanistan would not have fallen to the Taliban today. Had he just let the status quo continue, the status quo would have continued. Afghanistan would have plodded along and we would have kept the Taliban from power with a small force of American military personnel among whose ranks there had not been a single fatality since March 2020—17 months without a death. Keep that in mind as you listen to and watch people try to analyze away the horror that has befallen the Afghan people. The idea being retailed by the increasingly defeatist left and the increasingly isolationist right is that what has happened was inevitable. It was the opposite of inevitable. It wouldn’t have happened if Biden hadn’t acted.

In so acting, Biden has cast the future of American foreign policy into the worst state of disrepair since the last helicopter-carries-people-to-the-airport-to-flee-the-country scene 46 years ago. I am not saying we haven’t been in parlous condition during that time. Obviously the meltdown in Iraq in 2005-2006 was a disastrous period; the revelation that weapons of mass destruction we believed had been made by Iraq in the years between the end of the first war there and the beginning of the second likely didn’t exist was a body blow.

But here we have an American president announcing in April that we were pulling out of a country to end a war in which we haven’t been engaging in conventional old-time combat for years because, apparently, we just had to. Biden wanted to be the one to end the war, and he did so with tough love: The Afghan army was going to have to stand on its own. The time had come for the teenager to leave home...

Yes, that warmonger, neocon SOB. Let him go over there and risk his miserable neck. He and the rest of them (Bush, Cheney, Wolfowitz, Perle, etc.) should be ... well, at the very least shunned forever. They are responsible for all the carnage and the waste of a trillion or two. Disgusting, despicable jerks.

I think Biden’s incompetence in Afghanistan will tempt China to invade Taiwan.

I have been thinking about China invading Taiwan for a while. What has happened in Afghanistan simply makes it something that will probably happen sooner rather than later.

No more mean tweets. That’s the most important thing.

I don't believe that....as soon as the Taliban moved on any city, they were in violation of the agreement....and President Trump said....IMOW....You won't know what hit you."

So you think that once the Taliban started taking over towns after the U.S. military had left that Trump would have sent them back in? Really? I highly doubt that.

All Biden had to do was play “Dead.” Nobody would have noticed. Instead, he had to preside over the greatest debacle in history — just to get himself into the history books.

Dr. Jill Biden: “I want a divorce! I don’t want to be related to that guy. I only stayed because of the dogs. I had it worse than Melinda Gates.”

Powerful stuff written by a veteran.

I had no idea the US flew the queer pride flag at the embassy in Afghanistan. How stupid can the US government be?

I suspect when that happens the US will have a change in leadership and it will NOT be through ‘impeachment’ or an election.

Honestly I would not be surprised if we had a coup. Biden and his administration's incompetence is becoming unsupportable. And I think a lot of senior people are witnessing this SNAFU in Afghanistan and thinking of the blood and treasure we spent there the last twenty years. And deciding what to do about it. It reminds me of France in the early sixties after DeGaulle pulled out of Algeria. I think 'well, that can't happen here'.... but why the hell not?!

Now one of the most evil political forces the world has ever seen is back in charge of the government from which we rousted them 20 years ago.

Asked on July 7 about a possible parallel to the moment when U.S. helicopters evacuated embassy personnel on April 30, 1975, the president said, “None whatsoever. Zero….The Taliban is not the South, the North Vietnamese army. They’re not—they’re not remotely comparable in terms of capability. There’s going to be no circumstance where you’re going to see people being lifted off the roof of our embassy.”

Thirty-six days after he said it, we saw it.
