I’ve heard that China claims they have jurisdiction or ownership of Taiwan. I don’t know enough of the history of the situation. Does the UN or any international authority recognize Chinese control of Taiwan?
“Does the UN or any international authority recognize Chinese control of Taiwan?”
Good question. I know how Taiwan was formed. I know that it has operated as an independent state for quite a while.
I suspect that even if the UN had recognized Taiwan in the past, the current economic and political environment would encourage the UN to recognize Chinese control of Taiwan.
I believe China will exercise that control before the end of Biden/Harris’ term.
the Olympics committee won’t let Taiwan have a flag but Paletine gets one.
Both Communist China & Taiwan claim to be the legitimate government of China—all of China—Taiwan and the mainland.
Taiwan’s stubbornness in not declaring itself independent from China has left it in a precarious position.
“Does the UN or any international authority recognize Chinese control of Taiwan?”
Just about all of them do, to appease the Chinese. Even the US has a “one China policy”, where we pretend that Taiwan is just a province of China when we are dealing with the Chinese.
Basically the island was always part of China, but it was the last refuge of the Nationalist government after WWII. So it’s still sovereign Chinese territory, but there is one government in control of the mainland, and another “government in exile” ruling Taiwan.
When the Brits left, Red Chinese influence was set up for xxxx number of yeas ... Right??
That has lapsed
No, and the ChiComs have never occupied Taiwan. Taiwan is where the nationalist forces fled after being defeated in the civil war, after they helpfully defeated the Japanese while the communists sat back and waited.
Taiwan was taken from China by Japan in 1895, about the same tie Japan conquered Korea.
After WW II, Taiwan was returned to China.
