With today’s smart munitions it is entirely possible

Also Taiwan is 5X farther away than Normandy, many will
never reach the beach.

Isn’t the upstream side the stronger side? It’s basically an arch laying on its side and upstream is above the arch, which is designed to withstand all the pressure. Probably better to hit the downstream side that isn’t designed to resist pressure at all, eh?
