Does anyone know how the scoring works?

The writer implies that by her dropping out, it helped the US team. Is the average of the other three gymnasts substituted?

Out of the four team members, only two can compete on each apparatus. Both scores are added together.

Biles was chosen to compete on all four apparatus, and the other three were selected as the second on different ones.

Biles felt that if she competed and did poorly, it would drag down the team score and put a medal at risk. By dropping out, the other three each had to do two apparatus. The supposition was that, even if less prepared with only a moment's notice, they would score better than Biles would have.
