Actually, the Constitution doesn't call for a general election in the first place, and in fact since the process of chusing Electors is a reserved State power, even if there are to be elections, there are 51 of them, not a "general" election.

Actually it does, for Senators and Congressmen. All the states and DC have decided to allow the voters to also select the electors for president and vice president and use the same election day for that.

OK, OK. We were/are discussing the appointment of Electors, for which the Constitution does not even IMPLY a general election.
