I grew up NYC area 50s-60s. Times Sq was a real dog and pony show - a freakin’ pigpen.

Back in the 70’s I used to have to run the 42nd St gauntlet as part of my commute (from Port Authority to the East side subway system). I used to go out of my way a block or two down in the morning because it would turn your stomach at that hour.
