"Perhaps the concept was invented by some antediluvian civilization and carried by survivors to both South America and the Middle East."

Of course.

That would be the pyramid builders.

There are more pyramids in Mexico that all the rest of the world combined.

Sundaland

The cradle of human civilization may well have been the prehistoric lowlands of the Southeast Asian peninsula, rather than the Middle East. Since those lowlands ‘sank’ beneath the seas thousands of years ago (actually drowned by rising sea levels), humanity has remained unaware of their possible significance up through the early 21st century.

Its also very explainable why you see pyramids everywhere.
The shape is a natural first step in building anything tall.

Now maybe there was seaborne communication between the old & new world. I am the first one to say we sell the ancients short on what they could do. (I also don’t go overboard about what they ancienst could do either !). The Polynesians ventured for to conquer the Pacific during the late Neolithic. Humans are remarkably clever particularly when they need to be !
