I toured the state of Arizona a few years ago and was amazed at how these dollar stores served rural areas. Often you'd come around a bend on a two-lane road into a small valley with maybe a dozen scattered houses, and there would only be two businesses there, a gas station and a dollar store.
Yep, the dollar stores are rural and inner city mainstays. They operate with such a low overhead they can squeeze a profit out of these neglected areas.
