Colorado police on Friday explained how a heroic bystander who had just shot and killed a cop-hating gunman was himself fatally struck by a responding officer.
Johnny Hurley, 40, was shopping in downtown Arvada, a Denver suburb, when he heard Ronald Troyke ambush and murder Officer Gordon Beesley, who was responding to a call Monday afternoon, officials said.
Troyke, 59, then returned to his truck to grab an AR-15, and was holding it when Hurley — who was carrying a concealed weapon — confronted him and shot him dead, Police Chief Link Strate said in a video clip posted Friday. But when another officer responded to the scene, he saw Hurley holding the suspect’s rifle — and tragically mistook the good Samaritan for the cop killer, fatally shooting him, Strate said.

I am a State investigator (fancy cop). If I respond to an active shooter I go there EXPECTING armed civilians and act accordingly by using my eyes and brain to find work. I love armed citizens.
(side note: criminals don’t use holsters. Lol. That is one of my first clues I use when determining if someone is a threat. It’s true. And please support open carry. 👍🏼)
Hurley didn’t learn the first time that he was probably just lucky a cop didn’t shoot him then. If a cop hater or killer is involved, stay out of it. All civies are the enemy until the perp is caught or summarily executed.
I get it - so it was the young guy's fault the cop killed him. Makes sense.
The lesson in this is to let the cops take care of themselves and stay out of the fight - right?
Do we need them? Yes. But we need cops that will enforce laws first and foremost on themselves-and we certainly don’t have that.
Watch “Audit the audit” on YouTube and other audit channels to see how cops violate the law (the constitution) every single day. One time is too much.
Snd for a bunch of people on a site dedicated to “freedom snd the constitution” to defend it is a shame. Ben Franklin would have something to say about it-he would say you don’t deserve it because you are trading away your rights to these guys for the peace they bring. Congratulations
This story, as written, is so convoluted that it is impossible to fully understand.
I’ll have to read it somewhere else in order to know what happened.
Remember when there was the police shooting in Los Angeles, and the cops went bananas looking for the killer, shooting delivery drivers and anyone else in sight?
Also, this citizen seemed smart, aware and rational. In these situations I think the citizen would have responded appropriately, if he knew the cop was there. It is much more likely he didn’t have time to respond, or didn’t see the second cop. Be rational, and consider that people usually act true to their character.
I am wondering if the shooting cop was a woman, or someone the police need to protect for diversity reasons.
You sound like you’re British, am I right? In any case your desire that the rest of us grovel before the police nauseates me.
A love apparently not shared by the Arvada Police. I know it was a stressful situation with an officer having been shot but it seems clear that the responding officer fired first without trying to ascertain the situation. I doubt there will be any repercussions for the officer in question.
I wish more cops were like you. Thank you for upholding your oath!
I’ve had quite a few strange encounters with police.
Situations where they accused me of something that just wasn’t true.
And if you try to explain they say something like,do you want to go to jail.
What I am basically saying it’s a mixed bag but I still would not favor not having law enforcement.
Because a white, male officer would never, ever make such a mistake? </sarcasm>
I remember the Boston Marathon bombing and the defacto and illegal state of martial law that followed. Numerous people were threatened by armed police and active duty US Army troops. Homes were entered without warrants. People were beaten and arrested for being outside. Several incidents of indiscriminate force took place and at least one blue-on-blue incident took place when Boston PD fired on Dedham PD in Dedham. I witnessed the Dedham incident.
It was a clownshow and not at all the heroic response portrayed in the propaganda movie.
“I get it - so it was the young guy’s fault the cop killed him.”
You don’t get it.
I didn’t say anything about whose fault it was. The point is to keep it from happening in the first place.
The police have been told, “There’s a gunfight over there. Go get in the middle of it, and make them stop.” If you’re standing on the X, take care not to look like the shooter.
People, in case you haven’t noticed, are prone to error.
Except some of those people are supposed to be adequately trained and adequately courageous to employ deadly force in defense of the community. Instead, we have overweight bozos or diversity hires emptying magazines into whomever they chance upon.
Bet money no body cam footage from this one.
It should be obvious to anyone that the cops today are only interested in getting themselves home safely and "civilian heroes" will be executed if they get in the way of that objective.
No one, who thinks, wants to be a ‘cop’ today.
So with applicants inshort supply the quality goes down.
And I am not mentioning salaries and leadership.
VERY SAD situation
And one that the Insiders desire
“Except some of those people are supposed to be adequately trained and adequately courageous to employ deadly force in defense of the community.”
So, these people you envision, unlike every other hominin, hominid, and sapiens that ever trod the planet, don’t make mistakes.
Things are unsettled. Hell, things are downright weird. The numbers of LEOs being murdered is insane.
“Instead, we have overweight bozos”
Are you under the impression that obesity makes a person stupid?
“or diversity hires”
Always a bad thing.
“emptying magazines into whomever they chance upon.”
A cop is much more likely to be shot by a civilian than vice versa.
What an ignorant comment.
So every cop is bad, huh?
Sounds like something only a career criminal would say.
The hero who shot the bad guy and was later shot by the cop suffered from the wrong skin color. If he was a black guy, the cop wouldn’t have shot him but instead begged and pleaded 73 times to drop the weapon.
“No civilian should be “taking it upon themselves” to interfer in a police officials capacity to pursue, arrest or engage in an active and onging event.”
Of course... No matter how many innocent bystanders are exterminated while waiting for that to happen, only they have the authority to defend themselves, others or exterminate at will...
Again, true to form. “Inferior state owned civilian... Immediately submit to the superiority of your state task masters or die without question”.
I hope you never step into the middle of one of these trigger happy situations. You can’t say that it can’t happen...
In a free nation, where the right to keep and bear arms is protected, the mere sight of a gun cannot justify the use of deadly force from an agent of the state.
These two things, quite simply, cannot coexist.
The more we move into the future, the worse it seems to get. When I was a kid, I used to walk through our sheriff’s station parking lot, back where they kept their cruisers, with a shotgun over my shoulder, heading to the fields behind to dove hunt. The only thing I ever got from those fine officers was a friendly “how many did you get today?”
Where we are heading is not good. I often wonder what would happen if I tried that today. I sure miss the good ole days…..
