It was these guys - Hihdatsas which I thought were a Crow tribe.

Hidatsas were from North Dakota and were allies of the Mandans or related to them.

Something I didn't know is the Hidatsas may be the parent tribe of the Crow, who were further west, so, you very well could be right.
