Justus Angel and Mistress L. Horry were wealthy landowners in South Carolina’s Colleton District in the 1830s, in what is now Charleston County. The couple owned 84 slaves each for a total of 168, at a time when most of their peers owned a handful. Their slaves worked their plantation and made them rich. Angel and Horry also traded slaves for profit, showing no regard for dissolving slave families. They were no kinder or crueler to their slaves than anyone else. They were considered “slave magnates” because of the number of slaves they owned. They were referred to as the “economic elite.” They were also black.
Black people owned black people in all 13 original colonies and in every state that allowed slavery. Frequently, freed black people would go on to own more slaves than their white neighbors. In 1830, nearly a fourth of the free black slave masters in South Carolina owned 10 or more slaves, and several owned more than 30, far surpassing their white slave-owning neighbors.
Yes, black people, frequently former slaves themselves, owned slaves. While it can be said that many black people owned family members to protect them and keep them close, black slave owners also bought and sold slaves for profit. Renowned African-American historian and Duke University Professor, John Hope Franklin, wrote “The majority of Negro owners of slaves had some personal interest in their property. There were instances, however, in which free Negroes had a real economic interest in the institution of slavery and held slaves in order to improve their economic status.” Franklin also wrote that roughly 3,000 free black people in New Orleans alone owned slaves.
... it’s now about equity. YOU need to pay for what other white, and black, people stopped doing over 155 years ago.

“As long as money could be made using slaves to produce cotton, the institution of slavery was not going to be supplanted by industrialization for many decades after 1860”
Let’s focus on that statement. Sounds like you’d agree that a smart plantation operator would prefer share cropping to slave ownership since “more money could be made”.
You seem to be the one trick pony. Slavery is the fault of the Brits, the Muslims, the Africans. A very frequent theme of threads on this site. Somehow the thousands of Americans that bought the slaves are blameless.
What about all those Irish slaves? They were very numerous.
How many Irish slaves were freed by the Emancipation Proclamation or the XIII Amendment? Funny, the Constitution of the Confederate States of America makes no mention of shite slaves, only negro slaves.
“You rail against the wrong people.”
no buyers, not sellers.
You don’t go after the origins?
What’s your end goal?
What would you like?
I’m curious to know.
Hi.
A google search from three sources between 3000-10000 served.
Ive seen the 60k figure from two different sources. General Lee bio, Burns series.
The battle of Atlanta had 1000 slaves alone.
Homer j Simpson is doing a class on the War Between the States. Check him out for more info.

But he argued (quite persuasively) that slavery would have fallen of its own weight without a civil war, probably within another generation.
So this theory has some peer-reviewed credence - fwiw.
And for confirmation, one of my ggg grandfathers, writing to his son in the 1850s, said that slavery was economically unfeasible and was on its way out.
Sorry.
Cat made me do it.

Irish were treated far worse than were the black slaves and there are plenty of instances to document this statement. The only reason we don't hear about it is because the Irish descendants aren't pussies and whiny professional victims.
You increase in figures are of the natural procreation of existing slaves.
“In the South there were 18,000 manufacturing operations, in the North 110,000.”
The difference in industrial production between North and South is almost mind boggling.
IMO the 1860 Census is one of the better ones, it provides information on banks, newspapers, churches, manufacturing, agriculture, real estate valuations, railroads, shipping etc.
I actually printed out the 1860 Census for my own records about two years ago. The 1850 & 1870 Censuses are also good resources for people interested in U.S. history.
The last slaves brought into this country were brought in in 1859 0r 1860 into Mobile Alabama. Yes illegal, but sometimes people break the law.
An increase of over 1 million slaves in ten years does not in any way support the contentions that “slavery was dying”
It would have eventually. maybe with in 30 years or so.
But the use of slave labor produced prodigious wealth for many in American society, it was not going to end sooner than later.
How may Irish slaves were freed by the XIII Amendment?
Where does the Confederate Constitution mention “white slaves”, it does mention negro slaves.
I’m older than you and lived more of it...six years worth but those were a big six years ...I remember it all well
The klan was disliked by most whites..a vast majority
That said they didn’t want their kids mixing too much
And they distrusted black culture cause they saw it up close
Even before civil rights great society they saw black culture for what it was
Problematic for whites
Especially in the delta and black belt .....but especially the delta or like Claiborne or Fayette counties
Virtue signalers wished whites to hand over the keys
Were their fears justified?
I think they were and I came from a pro civil rights family ...insofar as equal rights.....and I saw first hand the dangers of refusing to join the Citizens Council...
Which is not the Conservative Council or Citizens from St Louis ...
I saw first hand Vernon Dahmers home burned....and the Schmitt contractors on pecan park
In Jackson
The klan were bloody bumpkins and really the third installment ....reconstruction klan which I am sympathetic to......yankee klan of Wilson era of which I’m ignorant of....and the Sam Bowers Beckwith bunch which I detested
My folks didn’t want a black daughter in law either
That’s racist today u know...
All that sound and fury and good intentions .....distant turn out too good
It’s funny the blacks who suffered appreciated white outreach
Three generations later they hate us...
Many do and younger middle class urban white kids hate us too and themselves
I call it a disaster frankly
Btw
This forum is as usual awash in south bashers breast beating from ignorance...lofty virtue signaling meets let’s throw southerners under the bus
Like that will safe the woke attacks on neocons and GOPe
Not
It is my understanding that those black Africans taken in battle as captives had one of three outcomes. First was being sold into slavery to slave merchants.. Two kept by the tribe as a slave. Third option was being kept by the tribe until a triple celebration was held then the captives were tortured and eventually slaughtered for tribal entertainment. Slave trade from the interior of Africa went on during the period of the Roman Empire. When Muslims conquered North Africa they continued the slave trade. Mohammad the “prophet “ was a slave trader., The slave trade across the Atlantic was new only in the means of conveyance and destination.
Slaves don’t want to be free, they want to be masters.
What law passed by Congress and signed into law embargoed farm products, seed, equipment and so forth?
There were tariffs on farm products, and machinery but that is not an embargo.
a smart plantation operator would prefer share cropping to slave ownership since “more money could be made”.
If that was the case, why didn’t they do that from the very beginning.
Were there not Irish slaves in America? Yes or no.
From what I have read and studied over many years, slavery was a condition which occurred everywhere in the world throughout history. Slavery was rampant in Biblical times and Jewish history makes it clear what slavery was all about. It was an accepted practice everywhere. Whites captured in Europe were used as slaves throughout the middle-east. American Indian tribes captured and used enemy Indians as slaves. It was commonplace until England and the US made the practice illegal and emancipated them.
