In the US, the word "Asian" refers solely to East Asians, since the woke police decreed that the word "Oriental" is no longer acceptable. That means South Asians, North Asians, West Asians are all excluded from the word "Asian" - only East Asians count as "Asians".

Similarly, in the UK the word "Asian" refers to South Asians - people from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka. Asia is a big place, and includes a lot of different ethnicities, as you noted.
