Warning Will Robinson! The last Win 10 update trashed the boot routines on two of my computers. I was able to undo the update on one and rescue it. My dual boot machine (Ubuntu and Win 10) had to be reimaged from scratch and the Windows backup and restore wouldn’t handle the dual boot software. Grub failed.

I ended up having to reinstall Office 2013, Quickbooks, and a few other programs from scratch. I’m glad I kept the original CDs.

“If you get a new one, don’t trash the one you have now, upgrade it to Linux ;)”

That sounds like a terrific idea! Can you provide a general description of what that would require? Thanks for the recommendation.

The high-altitude version is:

  1. Download an ISO of the distribution you would like to try
  2. Burn it to a USB stick
  3. boot to the USB stick and click "Install"
  4. Reboot

A Beginners Guide to Linux

It won't require much at all (besides a computer/laptop). As little as about 2gig of RAM and, I believe, as little as 1.2gig (I recommend much more than that though) of HD space.
I am sure your laptop has more than enough of that (if it is older, and doesn't have enough of either, you can always choose a lighter distribution.
Most people coming from Windows feel the most comfortable with Linux Mint Cinnamon, as it is (one of) the simplest and is very close in appearance to Windows.
Most Linux users here (FR) seem to use it and have made the jump while being FReepers. (I use Kubuntu, but would recommend you try Mint Cinnamon first).

The Tech support here (and on Mint's site) are excellent, so if you have a question, just post.
I believe Shadowace (FReeper, which I have also pinged) will be able to assist better and is the resident Linux guru. 🙃 He does the Tech ping list and is a pro with Linux.

I honestly can't remember if I started Linux before or after I started FReeping.. but I believe most FReepers that tested the waters with it, stuck with it (and loved it). Also, Linux will bring life to an old computer, and will be faster than you ever saw it while it was running Windows.
If nothing else, it can be a new hobby you can make go at your own speed (if you get the new PC/laptop).

Anyway, apologies for being long winded (without really explaining much).. if you have any questions on getting started, don't be afraid to ask (make a thread about it, you will be surprised how many will jump in to assist!).🤡
