Amid worries about China's growing navy, the US Navy is only asking for 4 new combat ships next year

The US Navy's newest budget request is asking for just eight ships, only four of which are combat vessels.

The Department of the Navy's fiscal year 2022 budget is $211.7 billion and focuses more on readiness than growing the fleet, even as the service calls attention to China's rapidly growing naval force. Shipbuilding procurement funding is down $700 million.

"Though the US still maintains far more tonnage than China, China's navy has more ships than the US Navy, and they are building ships at a much greater rate," the Navy said in an overview of its budget request.

The budget document further states that China has an overall battle force of 350 ships and submarines, including at least 130 major surface combatants. China is expected to field a third aircraft carrier as early as 2023.

The US Navy, by the end of fiscal year 2022, is projected to have a battle force of 296 ships.

Four ships? We could use about another 40. Of course there is the problem of finding enough diversity hires to command them.

We can’t even knock Chinese products off of store shelves to PREVENT the upcoming war.

College degrees are useless.

They want the rest of the money for the woke classes that serve only to piss off the real sailors.

War fighting is not their priority. How much clearer can it be?

Didn’t we once have a 600 ship (or close to it) navy?

It just might be that the Navy is coming to the realization that the era of surface combatants is coming to an end. Given modern technology that features but is not limited to pilotless stealthy drones, very stealthy hyersonic ballistic missiles, pinpoint satellite tracking of such ships and other high tech weapons, those surface ships and most importantly their brave young crews would not survive long in a war against a technologically sophisticated opponent.

Biden believes that the Chinese would not dare attack the woke soldiers he’s putting in the field.

With the way things are going, it won't matter how many ships we have. The CCP is going for war fighting, the US is going for SJW Wokeness. If we have no will to win, we can lose against any reasonably capable enemy who understands that war is about killing the enemy and breaking their will.

When you’re going to have $10 trillion dollar deficits, there isn’t the money to build new ships.

It could also be possible that our civilian and military elites/leadership has been convinced to surrender...from what I am seeing...all the idiotic decisions that make no sense what so ever...I am beginning to believe that the highest level of the military have surrendered to the CCP without a fight. If you look at the idiocy that Jim Mattis is spewing it is hard to see it any other way... The CIA based on their Critical Theory Recruiting video obviously has... the FBI could turn the election over tomorrow but they sadly have been politicized as well. Every institution in the US seems to be committed to its destruction. The CCP and Russia are laughing at us every day. This will not end well.

Could the navy try to go a little old-school with the tech? Simplify equipment so it’s more robust and less reliant on computers? Also less vulnerable to electronic warfare.

If we can’t find a way to stop future hypersonic missiles, modern ships of war may become obsolete.

While we need to continue to build major combatants, we also need other platforms.

DE subs for the littorals.

A couple of dozen frigates under 4,000 tons.

Unmanned drone surface and subsurface combatants.

The force needs to evolve, while maintaining dominance.

Absolutely correct. If you don’y have the will to fight and the desire to protect your values and lands, you will lose no matter how well you are armed. Right now the civilian leadership and most but not all of the politically correct pole climbing senior officers are a hazard to those soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines who are willing to fight to defend America as a nation. History has shown that almost all armies and navies decline in peacetime and the generals and admirals who are in command at the outbreak of hostilities are more adept at politics than war fighting. Many needless casualties have and will occur.

If commies take over they’ll give our ships to China anyhow...

Chairman Mao would approve of the CRT ‘education’ sessions... Of course Mao would have people who didn’t learn fast enough beaten up by mobs... but hell, our commie thugs can’t have it all... yet.

Why have a Navy if the people running it are too stupid to see what’s happening?

Joe Biden might as well invite 1 million Chinese males and give them a free shotgun upon moving in.

It is very simple. People are always fighting the last war, not the next one.
I’m a big time military supporter, MIC and all. A Vietnam era Vet.
But I do not trust the politicized Military leadership we have today. They seem too interested in their political nests and not the defense of our nation.
The job of the military and its only job, is to break things better and quicker than your adversary.
Whether is is a human, a ship, a city, or an entire nation.
Break it’s will and ability to fight you.
That is what needs to be our total focus, not a somewhat subjective quantity of some tools.
