The military has provided a leg up for lots of minorities. This is bs. And eh, yeah, the government just sees you as a statistic. You get no special attention until you try to stop the gravy train. You really don’t want their special attention.
The military has a large percentage of black members and has for many years. Yes, they do kid one another with words that today civilians would call offensive. But they are buddies and respect one another, they have each others back and they together, without regard to skin color, are a mighty military force.
She worked up to Lt Col. Apparently command along the way didn’t throw too many obstacles in her path.
Perhaps she earned the ABW because she was an ABW.
This article does not resemble my experience in the military. While I am not African-American, I am Jewish and in the 1960’s when I served not many of my fellow airmen were co-religionists. I was a medic assigned to a large AF Hospital. The commander of my unit was a Black Lt. Colonel, and one of the nurse Lieutenants, a Viet Nam vet, also was Black. Both Officers were treated with respect, something both had earned. Not even once did I hear anyone make derogatory comments about these Officers because of their race. Rather, among the enlisted, Officers uniformly were seen as good or bad, depending on how they dealt with the troops. Again, nothing to do with race. Finally, as a Jew, and thus a distinct minority, never once did anyone attack me for my religious beliefs. So, in my view the AP article is just another effort by the Left to destroy and then remake our military into a “woke” organization.
I was in the Navy for 21 years and experienced just the opposite. Minorities always got preferential treatment.

26 years in AF and I’ll raise the BS flag on this one. As a tactical radar controller (2/Lt) in Vietnam my enlisted technician who sat next to me, made all the telephone calls and helped me ensured that aircraft got to where they were going was black. We spent long hours talking about the past and our future. IO worked for a black O-6 in the basement of the Pentagon. His wife asked for a divorce and he was told by senior leadership that he needed a wife to make General. I helped him find an absolutely wonderful wife and partner in life and he did get promoted.
After I retired I worked for a black Army CW5. He was one of the most senior Warrants in Army. We went all over the world working together and we always helped each other to shine. We would be in the audience in a briefing and the four-star would around to the look at the Warrant and say, “Chief, what do you think?”
If she had a chip on her shoulder when she came in the service people sense that and they would go out of their way to make life miserable for her.
