A counterpoint on #1.

The odds of finding new old parts for the GTO are so remote if it’s not running now it’s either being parted out to restorers already or the owner is heartbroken and has given up.

#1 is a trick question that can not be properly solved without knowing the adjusted Bondo percentage.

A Georgia redneck decides to travel across the south to Virginia to see God's country. He comes to a small town and likes the place so much that he decides to stay, but needs to find a job.

He walks into the international paper company office and fills out an application as an experienced log inspector.

It's his lucky day as they just happen to be looking for someone, but first, the log foreman takes him for a ride into the forest in the company pickup truck to see how much he knows.

The foreman stops the truck on the side of the road and points at a tree. 'See that tree over there? I want you to tell me what species it is and how many board feet of lumber it contains.'

The redneck promptly answers, 'That thar's a white pine , 383 board feet of lumber in 'er.'

The foreman is impressed. He puts the truck in motion and stops about a mile down the road. He points at another tree through the passenger window and asks the same question.

This time, it's a bigger tree of a different class.

'That's a loblolly pine and she's got about 456 clear board feet.'

The foreman is really impressed with the good ol' boy, he has been quick and got the answers right without using a calculator!!!

One more test. They drive a little further down the road, and the foreman stops again. This time, he points across the road through his driver side window and says, 'And what about that one?'

Before the foreman finishes pointing, the redneck says,'White oak, 242 board feet at best'

The foreman spins the truck around and heads back to the office, a little ticked off because he thinks the red neck is smarter than he is.

As they near the office, the foreman stops the truck and asks bubba to step outside. He hands him a piece of chalk and tells him, 'see that tree over there,?' I want you to mark an "x" on the front of that tree!! '

The foreman thinks to himself, 'idiot, how would he know which is the front of the tree?'

When bubba reaches the tree, he goes around it in a circle while looking at the ground. He then reaches up and places a white "x" on the trunk. He walks back to the foreman and hands him the chalk.

'That thar's the front', the redneck says. The foreman laughs to himself and asks sarcastically, 'How in the hell do you know that's the front of the tree?'

The good ol' boy looks down at his feet, while rubbing the toe of his left boot cleaning it in the gravel and replies, 'Cuz somebody took a shit behind it!'

Ban them? Why not force them into incorporation?

Force them to have a government, municipal charter, utility hookups, etc. and tax them like everyone else.

It would be great to see the campaigning for mayor of Cracktown. The "winner" may not even know they were running for the position, much less that they won.

Just install sprinkler systems where they congregate. There are vagrancy laws on the books that only need to be enforced.

Or better yet, install loudspeakers out of reach and play Celine Dion music 24/7 at excruciatingly high volumes. Although the case could be made that Celine Dion is excruciating at any volume.

That looks just like the homeless camp in San Antonio, TX where the little kid zoo/museum train ran through. Real nice for the kiddies. Right there, arm’s length away.

Austin, TX is reporting “2,238 people living unsheltered in tents, cars, abandoned buildings, and other places not meant for human habitation, as well as 922 people either in traditional congregate shelter or temporary non-congregate shelter”. https://www.kvue.com/article/news/local/homeless/homeless-austin-population-2021-count/269-8ff09628-66aa-4ff8-af22-0eea6e1c52cc

Cue the ACLU to file a lawsuit. They are responsible for the ridiculous idea that public space means anyone can do anything at any time in any public place, including libraries and city sidewalks. They find judges who agree with them.

“I understand the desire of this body to send a strong message to the city of Austin,” Eckhardt said. “I will not defend the city of Austin for lifting a camping ban without a plan, because it did not help these poor people find their way to a home. But also I cannot support a statewide camping ban that does very little to help these poor people find their way to a home.”

****************************

One problem there. I knew a number of these people in the 80’s, in Austin, but they didn’t live in tents in town then. They found places, but not like today.

Thing is, most of them went “off the grid”because they wanted to.

It has nothing to do with being broke, unable to find a job, drug habits, or mental issues. Most of them I knew went off grid because they wanted to, plain and simple. You couldn’t get them to live in any shelter, go to a YMCA or any such thing. The Y has had such facilities for many years, other places are available.

They don’t want it. They want nothing to do with regular day to day society, you can’t get them to take more than a temporary job for 2 or 3 days, and most of them aren’t out breaking into houses and stealing every night either.

They live wherever they want to, bum quarters on the streets, do a lot of dumpster diving, especially around colleges at mid term, and don’t want anything more. One fellow found a rather nice boom box in a college dumpster, students leaving for the year throw almost everything out. I know he carried it for a year at least.

But you can’t get them to “rejoin society”, they left it intentionally and have no desire to go back.

Yes, some these days are drug addicts, mentally unstable and such, but I’m willing to bet more than you may think are exactly where they want to be, and have no interest in your homeless shelter whatsoever...they are content to keep bumming quarters, living out of a duffle bag, hitchhike somewhere else when they want to, an overpass on I-20 is as good a place as any to grab 40 winks. They don’t want any better.

And you can’t fix that. You can’t help someone who does not want your help. Most don’t.
