Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) on Tuesday suggested using a truck-only vehicle miles traveled tax during the Senate Finance Committee's hearing on infrastructure funding.
His suggested method would levy a tax of 25-cents for every mile driven. The mileage would be tracked via government-mandated devices that report the data back to the IRS.
-snip-
Texas Trucking Association President and CEO John D. Esparza noted taxing drivers a quarter for every mile equates to approximately $25,000 per truck that drives 100,000 miles a year – almost half the average salary for a truck driver.
"Eighty-eight percent of trucking businesses in Texas are small mom and pop shops already operating on paper thin margins who can ill afford to be targeted while helping the nation recover from a global pandemic," he added. "For those that can manage to survive a massive consumption tax, it will result in increased costs of goods and services for all consumers. What is bad for trucking, is bad for all Texans and a discriminatory tax will be felt by everyone."

Truckers are limited to 11hrs driving after 10 off.
Unless they average 90mph you might be off a wee bit.
It’s an insane amount of taxes... but zero chance truckers are driving 1,000 miles per day. At least not if they’re in compliance.
Most truckers keep two books.
They don’t want to have to stay overnight in their truck, if they don’t have to. They’d rather push it to 15 hours/day so they can sleep in their own bed more often.
I know a few truckers and they dint comply where they can get away with it.
This proposal, taxes aside, would make trucking even less attractive.
$.25 a mile? Good God! That would add up in a hurry. Good old GOP, assistant Democrats, at it again.
Of course Cornyn will give exemptions to his donors Walmart and Amazon.
Dems love hidden taxes. I’m surprised all taxes aren’t exclusively paid by businesses.
I voted for Cornyn, but his trends are such that he is clearly a RINO. The people of Texas need to remind him who he represents.
It’s all GPS now.
$.25 a mile!? Just more money for them to steal from it’s intended purpose to whatever suits them. Democrats must be salivating at the concept a Republican RINO wants to fund their illicit spending.
The people of Texas needed to replace him, not re-elect him.
Bush League Republicans never change their spots.
Other FReepers have already made excellent points why this is such a bad idea in every way possible. I would add to the list to consider the effect on the supply chain that is currently near crisis due to COVID. Putting this on top of it is just gasoline on the fire, IMO.
Some trucks have two drivers.
“Teams”.
“I think truckers are limited to 11 hr/day.
At 80 mph, that’s only 880 mi.”
One of my renters is a long haul trucker. He gave me a tour of his truck. It’s a 2015 with a “kit.” It has an engine from a 2000, which is cheaper to run, and no EPA spray tank (not the term) and he has no “elog.” Says he has no problem in California because, (smiling) “I’m a really nice guy.” Not sure what he meant there but I’m pretty sure he isn’t THAT nice.
the fiscal ignorance in this one is simply stunning...
They are not doing 80 in ny.
They are not doing 80 in ny.
What do you want to replace him with? It’s not enough to hate everything you’ve got. It’s required to actually have a plan.
I point this out knowing full well that you don’t have one, and this is your 200th daily dose of counterproductive omnidirectional hatestorming.
There has to be some one in Texas that sides with the citizens, they can’t all be globalist sellouts.
