WWII - USA totally unprepared, entered the war after a bazillion already killed

Thomas Jefferson took on the Barbary pirates. John Adams fought him every step of the way. Washington wanted to keep paying them off. Would the world be better off if he didn’t fight them? Was the war a form of corporate welfare/deep state?
We didn’t have a sizable “woke” population back then, with “transgender” types insistent on populating our military.
