The Red Planet rotorcraft headed south in support of furthering research into the potential use of aerial scouts on Mars in the future.

NASA’s Ingenuity Mars Helicopter completed its fifth flight on the Red Planet today with its first one-way journey from Wright Brothers Field to an airfield 423 feet (129 meters) to the south. After arrival above its new airfield, Ingenuity climbed to an altitude record of 33 feet (10 meters) and captured high-resolution color images of its new neighborhood before touching down.

The flight represents the rotorcraft’s transition to its new operations demonstration phase. This phase will focus on investigating what kind of capabilities a rotorcraft operating from Mars can provide. Examples include scouting, aerial observations of areas not accessible by a rover, and detailed stereo imaging from atmospheric altitudes. These operations and the lessons learned from them could significantly benefit future aerial exploration of Mars and other worlds.

I am firmly against spending billions of taxpayer dollars studying rocks on Mars. It’s a huge waste of money and time, IMO.

Omer: Day 40 - Hod sheb'Yesod Tonight Count 41

https://www.chabad.org/calendar/view/day.asp?tdate=5/7/2021

NASA's Ingenuity Mars Helicopter Completes First One-Way Trip

40th day of the counting of the Omer:

Acts 1

1 The former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach,
2 Until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen:
3 To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God:
4 And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me.
5 For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.
6 When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?
7 And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.
8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
9 And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.
10 And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel;
11 Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.

With Perseverance.

Knowledge, turned upside-down..

They’re not studying rocks.
They’re looking for life on Mars...

An even more foolish endeavor...

Northrup Grumman IT, a subsidiary of my company, Peraton, wrote the code and comms for the Mars helo drone. Lots of contractors in the mix.

I agree totally. It's a boondoggle just to keep career bureaucrats in taxpayer funding. They make huge salaries on our dime. There's lots more important discoveries to make right here on Earth. It disgusts me.

Yes, and so much more sensible than trying to send people there.

Actually the first one way trip was from Earth to Mars.
Just ask Dan and Mona.

I love how the names reveal a parallel story, being "minor" prophecies:

"Having successfully landed at its new airfield, Ingenuity will await future instructions, relayed via Perseverance, from mission controllers."

There is always something to unearth, even in other languages and on other planets.

The Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum even has its own "Mars Day!" events in mid-July, because the first lander on Mars (Viking 1) arrived on July 20, 1976.

45 years.. where does the time go?

Nice connection with the date of the first men to land on the Moon.

I checked the Hebrew Wikipedia page (I'm not a Hebrew speaker, but I never know what might be in a name at least), and the name "Viking" [ויקינג] permutes to "Go Yankee" [גו ינקי], or Yankee, go.

Interesting thing in the fine details, because Yankee is also spelled with a letter alef [יאנקי], which is the letter that is "1". Either way -- Viking, or Viking 1. Yankee, go..

So as the famous anti-American expression goes, the reviled "ingenuity" people are told to "go home". Heh, looks like the curse turned into a blessing, what with Ingenuity now having a very good time on Mars. :)

>>>

“We bid adieu to our first Martian home, Wright Brothers Field, with grateful thanks for the support it provided to the historic first flights of a planetary rotorcraft,” said Bob Balaram, chief engineer for Ingenuity Mars Helicopter at JPL. “No matter where we go from here, we will always carry with us a reminder of how much those two bicycle builders from Dayton meant to us during our pursuit of the first flight on another world.”

<<<

Dayton means Day town, and a Sol is a Mars-Day, the Latin "sun". The word plays roll on because in Greek sun is "helios", which down here in Punville is

Heli OS

Figured I should look that up:

>>>

Linux has remained a steadfast, trusted operating system for 30 years. One of the main reasons it is so reliable is because of one shining characteristic that we at DMC value most - it’s open source. This means that years before Ingenuity was set to accompany Perseverance to Mars, a massive scientific community worked together to improve, patch, and add to its code so that by the time Ingenuity launched, the rover was guaranteed to function efficiently. Of course, the hardware can’t be fixed now that the rovers have arrived at their destination, but it is still possible for the software to be patched from Earth if needed.

Linux on Mars: How the Operating System will Support Ingenuity’s First Flight on Mars

<<<

What Doc Brown said, "Where we're going we don't need roads."

And,

"You can't keep a good scientist down."

Hard to believe </s> that I've been dismissed and otherwise disrespected for my trains of thought (for my entire life), but I keep going because with all the cool stuff I find all day every day, I never have time or desire for mischief, heh.

And maybe, just maybe, a few folks will want to join in the fun and adventure. Never a dull moment. How much more could be discovered if many more people wanted to go "up"? But only if they want to..

It's truly "another world", born of perseverance.

Having successfully landed at its new airfield, Ingenuity will await future instructions, relayed via Perseverance, from mission controllers.

Discover the unknown! Can't you just taste the salt spray??

Calypso - John Denver:

I love how the names reveal a parallel story, being "minor" prophecies.

Aye Calypso, I sing to your Spirit
The men who have served you so long and so well.

Psalm 118.26. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord; we have blessed you from the house of the Lord:

Yankee is a name with an unknown etymology, just a few theories.

Because Jonah (yona) means dove (the same as the name Columbia who is the personification of America), I headed to the source, to Hebrew.

Root: י - נ - ק

to suckle; to absorb, to imbibe (ideas, influence)

And Jonah is famous for representing the soul on its mission.

To live on the land we must learn from the sea..
