He never explained why it made me a racist, it was sufficient for him to understand and that was it

No, ‘racism’ is a concept invented by communists as a weapon against the white and Christian middle and upper middle class people they hate. It is NOT a neutral concept that has been corrupted by the Left; it has always been a weapon.
You don’t have to go back to the era of Jim Crow to prove the Democrats are racists. All you have to do is look at their current party platform, which calls for racial preferences in hiring and university admissions (because the poor dears are too stupid to get in otherwise) and for one race to pay cash “reparations” to another race.
