China Seeks to Douse Speculation of Shrinking Population

China's population grew last year, the statistics bureau said on Thursday (Apr 29), in an apparent bid to quash reports that it had fallen, but stopped short of saying from which year numbers had grown.

On Tuesday, the Financial Times newspaper said that China was set to report that its population fell below 1.4 billion last year from 2019, in the first decrease in five decades, citing people familiar with the matter.

Advertisement The National Bureau of Statistics has delayed publishing the results of last year's once-in-a-decade census, with no explanation apart from saying that more preparatory work was needed. It had been due to announce the results in early April.

"According to our understanding, in 2020, our country's population continued to grow," the bureau said in a one-sentence statement, adding that detailed figures would be disclosed when the census results were published.

Births in China have continued to fall despite a two-child policy that replaced a decades-old one-child limit scrapped in 2016 in hopes of boosting the number of babies.

Last year, births plunged 15 per cent to 10.035 million from 2019, the Ministry of Public Security has said.

I trust none of the statistics published by the Chi-coms. Do they still have entire cities completely devoid of humans?

I thought a lower population was the goal of the Chinese leadership with it’s one child policy. Big oopsy there! Too many boys not enough girls to keep a steady population. I can see the Government mandating a births with the Social Credit score system and extra points for girls.

According to Wiki, India was just 50 million people behind China in 2018.

1.4 billion to 1.35 billion.

Of course, the accuracy of a census in India or China is always a big question mark.

No need - just explain to all the unmarried men that your wife is waiting for you in ______ (fill in the blank).
then you will see a whole bunch of unmarried men (2/3rds of the population)conquering foreign lands !

China’s excess men are all village farmers - the cities have plenty of girls. Those farmers don’t have the basic skills needed for military service, and would be of little value aside from cannon fodder in human wave attacks.

People overrate the risk of military conquest by China - and why do they even need to risk it? They just finished destroying every single Western economy using one mildly dangerous virus and a little bribe money directed to the medical experts.

Sun Tsu says that the best war is one where there is no actual physical violence, but that where you subtly overcome the adversary, and they don't even realize the attack.
The "Belt and Road" strategy is just one such 'peaceful' method of overcoming national sovereignty through financial and political coercion and intimidation.
Selling out one's national sovereignty and control little bit, by little bit, etc., etc...
Sorta like the frog in the warm pan, and then gradually raising the temperature, until it is cooked !
The Chinese are the only country that I am aware of who have a "thirty-year plan" for domination; they think in terms of long-range goals.

"People overrate the risk of military conquest by China - and why do they even need to risk it?"

Because there is a reason no modern army has ever been left untested. Too many generals in the PLA with easy access to 'their' weapons and cray ideas (see also, "Russia in Afghan"). All accounts suggest the PLA orchestrated COVID release - it was their weapon, you see -- not the CCP.

But it wasn't very effective, .006% of the world population (maybe), so ... what was the purpose?

It's patently, painfully obvious that it is a script that the PLA will follow to the letter when China is not just going to annex Taiwan but consolidate all of their military islands so as to demand the recognition of their exclusive No-Go Zone from the Spratlys to Qingdao.

To ensure compliance and a treaty to that effect, the PLA -- in a gross miscalculation -- will seige the Phillipines with a naval cordon and shut down their intra-island commerce (China owns Phillipines ferry services outright and most freight and port services). Duterte will be out of toilet paper in 2 weeks.

And then the nuke. "Oh velly solly, beeg mistake like COVID accident accident, have eriminated generals responsible"...

That is a line that we will cross. Anyone who thinks China won't use nukes against the US mainland had better get a lead snorkel and swim fins, because if you live on the coasts in the range of a Chinese sub, you could be swimming in radioactive glass.
