John Cornyn: Senate Should Pass Stand-Alone DACA Amnesty for Illegal Aliens

Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) says the United States Senate should pass an amnesty for illegal aliens enrolled and eligible for former President Barack Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program as a stand-alone piece of legislation.

This week, as Breitbart News reported, Cornyn and Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) led a meeting with 12 other Senate Republicans and Democrats to explore the possibility of giving amnesty to 3.5 million enrolled and eligible DACA illegal aliens.

“I would like to find a permanent solution for the DACA young people. I’m no longer comfortable using them to leverage other immigration provisions,” Cornyn said.

I remember early on during the Trump administration, liberal Congressmen like Luis Gutiérrez openly floated wall for DACA, which I supported because A. It would have allowed Trump to fulfill his most prominent 2016 campaign promise and B. DACA barely failed to pass in 2010 (passed the House, failed by like one or two votes in the Senate) and it was clear its day would eventually come in Congress, so might as well get something for it.

Then I got shouted down by many here. The all-or-nothing crowd, who will technically win when we all get nothing, I suppose. That wall sure would have been nice, it's working amazingly in Hungary as one example.

These are now grown up adults who were brought into this country as kids. It’s not their fault that their parent’s chose an illegal path. Most, if not all, don’t know of any other country other than the USA. This is one area where I think we can come to agreement, but I disagree with Sen. Cornyn’s approach.

I’m all for dealing with the DACA kids but R’s should get strongly enforcement in other areas of immigration. Strongly disagree with just doing DACA standalone.
