My sister, yes. Me no, it was just time to go. I did return for a period after the army. While home, I was not a leech, did work and kicked in money for the household. My folks did not want me to leave, Italian household, but understood desire to get on my own.
They haven't been back (and they are doing quite well for themselves).
My mother-in-law has lived with us since we got married (she divorced my wife’s dad), it was a godsend having her while the kids were growing up, they adore her (more than their parents, LOL!), but it would have been tough for both of us to work without her.
“For my eighteenth birthday I got three days to get out.”
I got 3 months. Moving out and getting on with life was the BEST thing that ever happened!
in all seriousness. Where are they suppose to live. millions of illegals and welfare recipients are first in line for welfare housing. Now that californicators can work remotely they are bringing huge amounts of cash to nice conservative places and buying every scrap of property on the market. They can thank their boomer grand parents and their idiotic voting patterns.
I have five nasty opinionated leftist nieces.
The oldest—44 years old—has never been married, and is now BITTERLY single. It’s “men’s fault” that no man in his right mind wants to marry her. She has a government job, she can afford to live on her own.
The next two, age 40, are equally opinionated, leftist, and sanctimonious. One has a government job, she can afford to live on her own. She actually got married in 2019, but she’s getting a divorce because her husband literally tried to murder her TWICE, held a large knife to her dog’s throat, and threatened to murder her dog. She dug this LOSER up on an internet dating site.
The other 40 year old majored in “Communications”, and she’s never been able to live on her own—ever. She’s always shacked up with the latest boyfriend who supported her over and over again. She recently had an affair with a married man 18 years older than her; he dumped his family for my skank niece, then married his young trade-in honey. If it weren’t for his income, niece would still be a minimum wage barista. She calls herself the “CEO” of her “social media” home-based company which has exactly one employee, her. LOL.
The next niece—35 years old, would be on welfare if she hadn’t married a nice man who is willing to put up with her. But their marriage is rocky, she once screwed around on him, and she actually has a police record due to her mood disorder. She’s been going to college since she was 19, says she’s going to earn a PhD in Spanish literature. At the rate she’s going, she’ll take another 10 years to get a PhD, if she does it at all.
The youngest, 25, has a BS overpaid job at the local university school of journalism. She can afford to live on her own, but there is no man in sight. She is your classic snowflake millenial who literally thinks she’s perfect, cannot tolerate the tiniest disagreement or criticism without having a Category Five total meltdown. I expect she will become another middle-aged bitter liberal woman who can’t find a “good man.”
Which is exactly what we did when they left. The only other bedroom of the 6 we had in our house is now a guestroom. We converted the rest into two offices, a library, a mancave and a home gym. We gave our kids luggage for their 18th birthday.
That's what I call, a "hint"!

“By July 2020, 52% of 18 to 29 years olds, or 26.6 million adults, were now residing with a parent, according to a new Pew Research Center analysis — the highest number since the Great Depression”
My kids are residing with 2 parents, so I guess that puts them in the other 48%.
Brings to mind the recent “Rebel” ads by Progressive insurance...

Moving back into Kiddie Land is hardly a means of starting a new phase of life, repainted or not, it's as retrograde as it gets. One single sentence in the article refers to the parents' point of view, favorable, of course. I suspect that isn't going to be a universal reaction...
That is a terrible idea for resale value.
You are turning your 3 bedroom house into a 1 bedroom house.
Every bedroom with a closet adds about $10K in value to your house. Even if it is a very small bedroom.
Remove any wall to wall carpet. Paint the walls either light grey or calming cream. Remodel bathrooms with chrome faucets. Neutral colors that will appeal to multiple buyers. Put real stone(like marble) on the floors.
bedroom walls are cheap and easy to construct
“Their smartphones cannot paint their rooms.”
I watch a few youtube videos - car repairs, outdoors stuff, etc. Some of them get millions of hits in a month and so I googled how much money they make off of youtube.
I didn’t find out - but out of the top 10 youtubers (making 500k to 1.5 million a year!) about 5 of them were related to video games like Minecraft, Pokeman, etc.
It’s not just NYC. Home prices have been steadily rising for 50 years while real wages have been stagnant.
I agree.
Multigenerational families from other cultures do very well here because they join forces.
Sounds like a little house on the prairie.
18 t0 29 are not Millennials are they?
39 is just the front end of that group but geez? Really? Moving back home at 39? Talk about failure.
I confess to not being able to keep up with the classes and castes that are now designated for special interest groups.
