How can he be convicted of murder(s) (intent to kill) while at the same time, convicted of manslaughter (unintentional homicide).

Either he did it with purpose or not.

None of the charges involved intent to kill. The second degree murder charge was for felony murder-- unintended killing resulting from commission of a felonious assault.

I really wish one of these legal talking heads would answer this question.

I don’t know anything about civilian criminal law, but I was a Marine Corps officer long enough to pick up more than a passing amount of knowledge on courts-martial. In the military, the jury is instructed to consider the lesser-included charges only after reaching a verdict on the more serious charge.

This verdict is bizarre, to me at least.
