I think you’re giving the thugs way too much credit for their critical thinking skills. No matter what the verdict, they’re going to riot at pretty much the same level (though “not guilty” would certainly amp it up significantly). If found guilty, no matter the level of the charge, it will be seen as not enough.

Also to be remembered is the fact that the riots are street theater contrived by powerful interests acting from the shadows. They’re not about to skip the chance to perform for the cameras, no matter the ostensible reason for the “outrage.”
