About 700,000 people die in the US every year. COVID has not changed that number. Your brother in the ICU probably has one of the many upper respiratory infections that are now being labeled COVID because of financial incentives.

Began to lift in the third week and my breathing normallized after a few months. In the meantime, my heart checked out OK.
Post nasal drip didn't completely lift until I used the Iword a month ago. It was one hour and like someone pulled the drain stopper on a utility sink.
That said, I find the loss of test and smell, which many people seem to report, a very specific symptom that I have never experienced with any other illness.
My 87 yo father-in-law passed away in a hospital in New Jersey at the end of December. Had gone in after Thanksgiving with pneumonia and was doing well after a few days. His wife was allowed to sit with him every day, we got to call him and looked forward to his discharge. Every day, discharge was put off “just to make sure”...and sure enough he ended up with covid after 10 days. He was shifted to the covid floor with no visitors. Ten days later he died.
Anymore, I tell people that he died of loneliness. While he, of course, is another covid statistic, no one will ever be able to convince us that he could have perhaps pulled through if he could have had someone holding his hand, feeling his wife’s presence, talking to us on the phone instead of then being surrounded by strange beings in PPE darting in and out. He was allowed very limited video calls with his wife ...he was so lonely and became hopeless.

It is impossible to totally fool that many people in the health care field, who are educated, informed on the latest in their field, ethical in their practice, and selflessly dedicated to the sick.
