United Airlines has decided that it’s time for a little makeover. The airline is not going to do that by changing its paint scheme, its in-flight service, or its billing structure. No, it’s got a much more ambitious objective in mind. United will polish its woke credentials by giving its clientele what it wants most -- diversity in the cockpit. United has announced that 50% of its new pilots entering training will be females or people of color.
To fully appreciate the flaw in United’s decision, it’s important to understand the reasoning of the diversity industry. When I was an engineering manager, I had occasion to hire a number of new engineers. To ensure diversity, our HR department would be intimately involved in the hiring decisions. Their reasoning was that any person that met the job requirements could do the job. They had no recognition that a person with greater capabilities may do the job better. The qualifications were to be treated as strictly binary -- the person could either do the job or not.
Since I was prohibited from looking for the best candidate, I was required to make selections from the remaining pool of qualified candidates, based on various diversity hiring criteria. It was presumed that a person with greater qualifications/capabilities wouldn’t provide added value over those who were merely qualified. Therefore, as the hiring manager I was not permitted to seek competitive advantage by hiring the “best.” As long as a candidate could do the job, and met diversity criteria, that was good enough.

It’s getting to the point that one questions whether a Black professional you may hire or have working on you is the best, competent or a social promotion.
Something Blacks should ponder.
It’s been that way for decades.
We will never know if MLK was true to his words, or was just a leftist grifter as the rest of his acolytes (i.e. Jessie Jackson ) turned out to be.
His niece does seem to be the genuine article though.
The only pilot-induced crash of an EP-3 ARIES.... (Besides the one that was hit by a Chinese fighter and wrongly emergency-landed in China rather than ditching in the ocean) was in Souda Bay, Crete.....
Female pilot at the controls on landing, Hispanic pilot-in-command, black commanding officer sitting on observer bench. Thus perfectly embodying the folly of quotas.
Obvious question: why not hire just based on merit of the candidate?
There should not be discrimation in the workforce. People tend to hire people like themselves.
It is good to encourage professional development regardless of race and sex.
Not to mention that the entire notion of quotas is wildly insulting. It means you don't think they're good enough to compete on their own merits.
I was trying to be gracious. Yes
And in the present atmosphere, aside competence, what about hatred toward Whites.?
The best thing to see in the cockpit is not white or black skin - it is gray hair.
More experienced pilots are safer.
When I actually have to consider if the Captain of the airplane I am about to board is the best the airline could put their or if he is there because of his gender or skin color I will no longer fly that airline.
I an quite sure I am not alone in thinking in this way.
Are the planes going to have spinner rims on the wheels?
LOL if I could do photoshop I’d make a 747 with gigantic chrome rims...
Perhaps hospital emergency room doctors will be next. At least the current ones that aren’t already staffed by a bunch of nurse practitioners.
Shun any company willing to put illusion over safety
Or
Demand the same silly standards be applied to professional basketball, football, and baseball teams.
Nicely done!
I don’t care if the pilot is polka dotted. I just want him/her to be the best stick around.
I keep thinking of the all female engineers who built that bridge in Florida and simply collapsed and crushed those unfortunate to be under. Flying is another level what can go wrong.
Doesn’t matter if the pilot can handle any emergency as long as there is diversity. Yeah, sure, that’s really what the passengers want when they’re tumbling to the ground.
This is likely being seen by the airlines as an opportunity to downgrade the pilots union (the Air Line Pilots Association, International (ALPA)(AFL-CIO), who they regard as long overpaid, self-important, pretentious, glorified bus drivers.
That is, ALPA cannot object to diversification, but it will bust up the pilot’s club.
