Philip served with distinction in His Royal Navy during WW2.
He could have had a career in the the British Navy. Instead he served the Crown(his wife). He easily could have been a flag officer.
His contemporaries are on record that he had the talent and drive to become First Sea Lord. (equivalent to Chief of Naval Operations).
