When my family came over from Ireland, as Scots-Irish, the family name was Mackenzie. But, from what the family tradition explained, due to my G-G-G Grandpa’s severe accent, he ended up with the name “Mackenzie Costley” ... the clerk misheard him and used the family name as his first name and a corrupted version of his hometown of Castleigh as the family name ... “Mackenzie Costley” ...

I learned of a Jewish family who came through Ellis Island bound for Canada as their next stop, and were registered under the surname "Kennedy." (approximate Yiddish pronunciation of "Canada")
