Anyone remember the total disaster the Federal Government created with Urban Renewal back in the 60's? First, they tore down huge swaths of historic homes and businesses in urban areas, many of them owned by blacks at the time. Then replaced those fine old structures either with 1960s crap project housing or they bisected neighborhoods with giant expressways to move people quickly out to suburburban housing. In short order the project housing, owned by government agencies, fell into disrepair. Blacks who were homeowners were now renters. Yeah, that worked out real well. That along with the War on Poverty.
Government housing also helped destroy black families. Rules were if the father lived in the home, benefits were cut or totally stopped.
Also the housing was built on prime land. When it was torn down gentrification took place with expensive high rises and condos replacing what was once a nice mixed or black neighborhood.
But what the heck. We’ll do better this go round.
