Freight has always been the big money maker in rail. Amtrak needs to be subcontracted to the freight roads. Cheaper and more efficient.

But, thinkin’ they may extend the H-1 for interisland travel. Pretty sure I heard a clip of pedo joe talking about improving the interstate so that you can go coast to coast without using a single tank of gas on a high speed train. Or something. Hard to figure out what he’s muttering about with the uh, thing, and stuff. Now, where did I put Major?
I’d be pissed if I lived outside the NEC. That seems to be where a great chuck of all AMTRAK money is going. Those states served by the NEC should pay a LOT more for that HS rail and service!!! So more money could go elsewhere... But, you know, if there’s ANY “Federal” money, that NY and Boston will find a way to get more than their share!!
For reference,do know where the private sector, from anywhere in the world, in the last 20-30 years has built out a HS Rail line the length of NY to Chicago??

It's because Europe is miles behind us - and more densely populated. Chicago to New Orleans = 926 miles. Edinburgh to London = 403 miles.
Local Dims are seizing on this insanity to try to build a passenger train along the Colorado Front Range. Seriously. The Denver Metro can’t support the existing light rail network, but these “transportation” zealots want to build a big boy railroad no one will use.
None, because no government in the world ever permitted it.
The closest we got was the “Northeast Corridor” under the Penn Central Railroad (a merger of the Pennsylvania RR with the New York Central RR plus associated affiliates such as the New Haven RR); the Budd Metroliner train was supposed to have run at 160 mph in regular service, but thanks to federal government interference they traveled no faster than 110 mph, although they did achieve a 90-mph average speed on super-express trains between New York and Washington DC.
Also wanted to point out that most government-built HSR lines overseas are limited to about 400-500 miles due to geography and national borders.
