What was particularly embarrassing, for all concerned, about the HMS Vanguard incident was that it happened in front of a large audience. Thousands of locals (me among them) lined the old walls of the harbour entrance to see her go. Passing ships seem almost in touching distance at that point. Vanguard came even closer as she swung across.

She was a beautiful ship, but she never saw action - completed just too late for the war.

Wow, I bet that was a sight. Closest I ever came to such a thing was watching the lake freighters cross the straits at Port Huron.

Yes, she was a beautiful ship. I’ve had four models of her over the years, two in 1/450 (Hasegawa) and two in 1/144 (R/C and all that).

Pity she wasn’t completed in time to pay a visit to Scharnhorst or Tirpitz.
