Was I taking crazy pills when the “he later recanted” trope was refuted by him directly? If I recall correctly, he was badgered by investigators into agreeing to singing something that was a partial agreement by him that he didn’t see some aspect of the original story explicitly but was firm that his story was accurate and the only reason he could come up with for that something to have occurred was that something else was true, and then within a day of that investigation, the news got hold of word that he recanted his entire story. Then like four days later he went on camera and explained that he stuck by his original story. If that was all a dream, it’s better that I know that now.

It is like the second person who was with Timothy McVeigh when he picked up the rental truck he used for his terrorist attack. There was an FBI composite drawing and eyewitness testimony it was based on.

And then the story changed. McVeigh was alone and drove both his car and the truck home by walking back and forth between them. And the people at the rental company remembered differently...

Made all kinds of sense to me.
