I thought using the term “oriental” was racist. I do know not to mix up Chinese, Korean, or Japanese.

Well, it does get confusing.
My wife (conservative & 70 yo) wants to be called Oriental.
My daughter (liberal & 36 yo) want to be called Asian.
And besides Chinese, Korean and Japanese, you’d better not mix up Vietnamese, Thai and Philippine. My Vietnamese wife really doesn’t like being mistaken for Philippine.
